AI Engineer

At Root Sustainability, we’re helping companies understand the environmental footprint of everything they produce — and we’re doing it from the bottom up. Think: tens of millions of purchase order lines, hidden supply-chain emissions, vague product descriptions, and complex domain knowledge. AI is becoming a key part of solving that, and we’re now building a domain-specific engine that uses LLMs to help customers make smarter, faster impact estimates.

We've recently closed a seed investment round of €1 million and we're looking to expand. That’s where you come in.

🚀 The role

We’re looking for a pragmatic, hands-on AI Engineer who can take LLM-driven features from idea to production. You will work on things like:

• Designing domain-specific inference for environmental data

• Making LLM outputs stable, traceable, and reproducible

• Building structured reasoning pipelines (not just chat)

• Embedding product descriptions to match impact datasets

• Evaluating models for accuracy, hallucinations, and bias

• Deploying and scaling LLM services on AWS in production

• Integrating model outputs with our Python/Postgres platform

You’ll help define how AI is used inside our product. You won’t be alone. You’ll work closely together with our dev team, but you’ll take the lead on everything AI.

🛠️ What we think you'll need

• 3–5+ years of experience in software and/or ML engineering

• Strong skills in Python, with experience in LLMs or NLP

• Experience deploying AI/LLM workloads on AWS (or similar)

• Ability to design prompting pipelines, not just prompts

• Experience with evaluation, monitoring, and versioning of models

• Knowledge of embeddings, vector search, or semantic similarity

• A product mindset: you optimize for clarity, reproducibility, and user value

🌎 Time and location constraints

• Legally authorized to work in the EU or set up to work as a contractor

• Available between 10AM and 4PM CET on working days
